The railway embankment, which forms most of the route of the railtrail, was constructed from Lincoln to Little River between 1879-1886 at a cost of £107,492 /2 /0. The line was intended to continue to Akaroa via a mile and a half long tunnel beneath French Hill to Barrys Bay.
